Tulipmania was written and performed with Music Theatre Department at the Royal Conservatory and in connection to a contemporary dance project developed by Yannis Kyriakides, Slagwerk Den Haag and Club Guy & Roni. The audio-visual work deals with the theme of “Tulipmania” – 17th century Dutch craze about tulips, which has caused what’s regarded as the first economic bubble and crash in the world. This involved tulip bulbs, murky merchants and financial machinations. Since the demand The video is using several elements:
- A list professions which was compiled during the crash and which names the occupations of people that have invested money in the tulip bulbs.
- The data of tulip bulb price fluctuation, sudden rise and eventual crash
- Names of the most famous tulips which were traded during the that year
All of these texts were combined with an extraction of the 1st 100 images that come up once word “tulip” is searched on Google. These images were then mixed into a high speed projection in sync with the noisy musical material.
