Blown asphalt, natural bitumen, steel, 32 x 161 each, 2026

The imagery across the seven panels was created using a custom-made neural network which was trained on museum records of underworld iconography. Altar panels, divination paraphernalia, and funerary objects from collections across the world (since the underworld has no political borders) formed the work’s basis. This speculative vision of the afterlife’s future was then transferred by hand onto steel using unprocessed bitumen from Niigata, Japan.
